It’s okay. Don’t worry.
Charles kissed Daisy. It was amazing how a dog could make you feel better. Daisy seemed to know exactly how he was feeling. He thought again about the sirens. “Probably it was scariest for Luke.”
“Why don’t you invite him over?” Mom asked. “I bet he’d like to meet Daisy.”
At her name, Daisy began to squirm, wriggling her way out of his arms. “Good idea,” said Charles. “I’ll call him later. But right now I’d better get this girl outside.” His mom gave him one last squeeze and let him off her lap.
“No more secrets, right?” she asked him.
He stuck out his hand for a shake. “No more secrets.”
After he’d played with both puppies in the backyard for a while, Charles called his aunt. “What do you do if you have a puppy who wants to chew things up?” he asked.
“Uh-oh,” said Aunt Amanda.
“She’s not eating things, like Jack,” Charles said. “She just, like, destroys stuff.”
“Got it,” said Aunt Amanda. “Well, for one thing, you need to keep an eye on her. Don’t give her the chance to chew things up. If you see her chewing on something she shouldn’t, you can swap it for something it’s okay to chew on, like a Kong toy.”
“But I can’t be with her every second,” said Charles.
“Funny you should say that,” said Aunt Amanda. “Some people do stay with destructive dogs every second when they’re training them. It’s called tethering. They keep the dog leashed by their side all day.”
“I don’t think Mr. Mason would let me have Daisy with me at school,” Charles said.
“Guess not.” Aunt Amanda laughed. “So she’ll also have to spend some time in a crate. Hopefully this is just a phase she is going through, and she’ll grow out of it soon.”
Charles watched Daisy closely for the rest of the day, even after Lizzie came home from walking dogs. He felt like the little pup was his responsibility. If she kept destroying things, how would they ever find her a forever home?
